What to Wear for Senior Photos in Bend, Oregon

Planning for your senior pictures and wondering what to wear? You’re in the right place.

One of the most common questions I get as a senior portrait photographer in Bend is, “What should I wear?” And yes, I send a prep guide to all of my seniors with some tips on wardrobe and location, but I thought a quick intro here might be nice too.

The best news is, you don’t need the “perfect” outfit. You just need something that feels like you — comfortable, confident, and true to your style.

Senior pictures are about capturing you - not your outfit or the background. But I know that when we’re not wearing something we feel good in, that can show up in our photos.

This quick guide will give you some things to consider when you’re trying to narrow down your choices, but remember, it’s just a guide. You do you. The most important part of this whole senior portraits thing is the experience and having fun with it!

Why What You Wear (kind of) Matters for Senior Photos

Your senior year is a milestone, and your senior photos are meant to capture this season exactly as it feels right now. What you wear sets the tone — not because it needs to be trendy or fancy, but because it affects how you show up.

When you feel good in what you’re wearing, you move more naturally, relax faster, and look like yourself. That’s what creates senior portraits that feel genuine and authentic. You want to look at your senior pictures and think, “Hey, that’s me!” Capturing the real you is always my biggest priority, and this guide is meant to help you show up in a way that feels best for this moment.

what’s the aesthetic?

Consider location and go from there. “I want my pictures to look like…”

SOME CLASSIC COMBOS: Locations for a photo shoot in Bend, Oregon often involve the beautiful great outdoors — pine trees, open spaces, mountains, rivers, and soft natural light. Your outfit doesn’t need to match the location, but it should feel at home in it.

Types of clothing that tend to photograph especially well in outdoors, natural light:

  • Soft neutrals and earthy tones like cream, olive, rust, denim, and camel

  • Muted blues and warm whites

  • Layers that add texture without feeling super bulky

  • Clothes you can sit, walk, and move in comfortably

These choices keep the focus on you and let Bend’s landscape be a beautiful backdrop — not a distraction.

MIX & MATCH: While we want the focus on you (remember, eyes are the window to the soul and soul is what photography is all about), making a little statement through your clothing is important to lots of us! Want to bring along some bold pieces to a beautiful natural setting to add some contrast and pop? Do it!

Some things to consider:

  • Choose one bold piece over multiple layers and accessories - while that is great for high fashion content, senior photos are more about the person underneath all the exterior

  • Go for unique! Love thrifting at your local thrift shop? Find something special that marks the moment and makes you smile!

  • Borrowed is sometimes the best! Maybe a parent, aunt or uncle, or bestie has a piece that you’ve been eying. This is the perfect time to ask for the chance to showcase it (and honor your love for them).

And of course, don’t forget something with an urban feel is possible here too! The Old Mill District and certain places in our quaint downtown Bend area are perfect for keeping things feeling a little city and less outdoorsy.

just some Things to Keep in Mind…

This isn’t about rules — just awareness. I love bold, bright colors…until I’m being photographed in them.

  • Super bright or neon colors can reflect onto your skin (seriously - neon green doesn’t do well on camera)

  • Large logos and busy patterns can pull attention away from your face

  • Anything you’re constantly adjusting will feel uncomfortable on camera

Think About How You Want Your Senior Photos to Feel

Instead of asking if an outfit is “right,” ask yourself:

  • Do I feel confident in this?

  • Does this feel like me?

  • Would I still love seeing this photo years from now?

Many seniors ask me if they can bring more than one outfit and my answer is always YES! Bring what you want and we’ll photograph what we have time for! Most seniors bring two or three outfits for their senior portraits — usually a casual look, something a little more elevated, and one outfit that feels especially personal. That mix creates a natural, well-rounded gallery (and gives you lots of options).

Hair, Makeup, and Accessories

Keep these simple and true to you.

  • Wear your hair in a style that already feels like your best look

  • Soft, natural makeup photographs beautifully

  • Accessories should enhance, not overpower

  • Comfortable shoes matter more than you think

And remember — part of working with a senior photos photographer is having guidance along the way. You don’t have to figure this out on your own.

Final Thoughts

Your senior portraits should feel like you — not stiff, not overstyled, and not like you’re trying to be someone else. Wear what you love, be thoughtful with your choices, and trust the process.

When you feel confident and comfortable, it shows in every photo. And that’s what makes senior photos meaningful.
